About Fractals
So what are fractals exactly?
Technically, “a fractal is a shape that is recursively constructed or self-similar. This shape appears similar at all scales of magnification and is referred to as "infinitely complex" - Wilkapedia. Naturally occuring fractal formations can be observed in snowflakes, clouds, coast lines, mountain ranges and more. Our genes and DNA create fractal templates which are used in complex processes involving information exchange. This process occurs within 98.7% of the so-called “Junk” DNA.
Thank goodness for mathematicians!
It was early in the 20th century, when French mathematician Gaston Julia discovered a fractal formula now referred to as the Julia Set. “The spiral patterns of this set follow the phi ratio and mimic the energy flow in various natural phenomena, including nautilus, lighting, spiral galaxies and so on. But the most famous of fractal formula, the Mandelbrot Set, was later discovered in 1978 by Oxford mathematician Prof. Benoit Mandelbrot. Yet, it has only been with the invention of the computer that we are now even able to generate these fractal images.
These pioneers opened the gate way with these incredible formulas that now enable us to visually see new levels and dimensions of energy and existence. It is quite similar to the way the microscope opened our minds to a whole new world of microbes and bacteria. Yet even more fascinating, is a new discovery into the understanding of what fractals are and what they do.
Fractal art enables us to bring into physical form, a visual expression of Divine Energy and the multi dimensional nature of the infinite. Deep within the mathematical equations and formula, we have discovered yet another place where science and spiritually become one.
It was proven to be the absolute maximum Space Filling Curve possible in 2 + Dimensions. if the boundary region was one 'quanta' more curved inward on itself it would HAVE TO overlap, popping into 3 dimensions.
More Than Meets The Eye
The photo on the right was taken in 1991 in Britan. This Mandelbrot crop circle appeared near the school attended by Benoit. It appeared exactly one year (to the day) that a major scientific magazine had printed an article about the Mandelbrot set, in which it stated that it was impossible to reproduce a mandelbrot at perfect scale without the use of a computer.
The Mandelbrot also has a close relationship to the period-doubling 'Chaos' equation, which is used to describe population expansion, plant growth, weather instability and a host of other physical processes.
Also, the curves contained within the Mandelbrot have been discovered in cross-sections of magnetic field borders, implying there is a 3-D mandelbrot equivalent that is closely tied to electromagnetism and therefore a deep structural and fundamental aspect of life, and physical space/time.
Just imagine for a moment - Taking a slice of the magnetic field of the earth, sun, a plant or the data on audio or video tape, and seeing the Mandlebrot shape - ALL THIS DATA IS STORED AS THE MANDELBROT SET!
This suggests an unknown, yet-to-be-clarified fundamental importance of the Mandelbrot Set in many processes, both physical and non-physical.
Physiological Impact of Fractals
Scientists Studying Fractal Recognition

Imagine working in a windowless building, cut off from the soothing sight of clouds blowing across the sky or leaves rustling in the wind, as another deadline looms. Feeling stressedFirst, though, it's important to understand what fractals are. Simply put, they are patterns that repeat themselves at increasing levels of magnification. Think snowflakes.
Of course, it gets more complicated than that. It turns out that the mathematical relationships in those obvious kinds of fractals also exist in things that don't have any kind of obvious pattern at all. Think coastlines and tree branches and clouds.
But somehow our brains seem to recognize these patterns, Taylor said. And certain kinds - those that fall in the middle range of complexity - have been shown through earlier research to have a soothing effect on people.
Not coincidentally, scientists believe, those are the kind of fractal patterns found most often in nature. Enter the UO researchers, who are trying to figure out how our brains process these images and eventually harness nature's fractal patterns for use in the built environment.
Paul van Donkelaar, a professor in the UO's department of human physiology, is working with Taylor on a project that tracks the small movements of the eye as a subject looks at a computer-generated fractal pattern. The idea is to get a better idea of how the brain recognizes and assesses the patterns.
The research has caught the attention of a documentary filmmaker, who was on campus recently to film the project for a show to be broadcast on PBS next year.
Van Donkelaar said the research is breaking new ground by using such complex images. Until now, only very simple images have been used when looking at eye movement.
"It's definitely a different way of looking at relationships between visual input and motor output," he said. "The thing in between those two is the brain. What's going on in the brain in all this? We know it's not just random eye movement."
The research also has caught the interest of scientists in Sweden and Australia who are part of what is becoming an international effort. Taylor and van Donkelaar hope to establish a joint institute, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Complexity, with the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
At the UO, the research has spread not only to physics and human physiology but also to psychology, where professor Dare Baldwin is working with infants to see if fractal recognition is innate or learned, Taylor said. Ultimately it could involve art and architecture as ways are sought to introduce fractals in building design.
"To me it's fascinating that you can stare at these things and it does have an impact physiologically," Taylor said. "And it can be quite a profound one."
And with all that stress in the world, Taylor figures anything that helps people feel better can't help but be a good thing. Think fractal wallpaper.
"If we can take even a small bit out of that $300 billion we spend on stress, we're doing everybody a big favor," he said., you look up at the wall and see a strange but somehow pleasing pattern etched into its surface. You feel better.
That's the kind of future that University of Oregon physicist Richard Taylor imagines, and now he's working with other scientists at the UO and other universities around the world in hopes of realizing it. They're studying patterns known as fractals in an effort to understand why and how certain ones seem to give people a mental boost.
"I think it's very important to understand what makes people feel good," Taylor said, citing the estimated $300 billion that stress-related problems cost the American economy each year. "There's so much stress in the world today."
The Making Of
The Making of Intuitive Fractal Energy Art
Cheryl creates fractals using mathematic formulas applied in layers to the basic fractal shape called a Mandelbrot. She recieves guidance as to which formulas to apply. There can be anywhere from 25 to 500 formulas applied to one fractal and it can take up to four weeks to complete one image.
Although fractals were discover nearly 30 years ago, we are only now beginning to see the greater meaning and importance of fractals, both spiritually and scientifically. The very nature of fractals and how they are created makes each fractal unique. They are one of a kind images. The probabilities of any two fractal artists creating the same image are so low that it is nearly an impossibility.

Connecting In
All of these fractals are created after meditating and connecting - to the Divine and Higher Self. Cheryl discovered her own unique manner of connecting to Source after her experience with Angels opened her ability to communicate with her guides.
Some fractals are created intentionally based on words or phrases (such as the fractal Clarity and Personal Essence Fractals). Other fractals come through Spiritual inspiration and are "creations of their own". Cheryl explains this inspiration as a feeling of being nudged to begin working on a new fractal. She jokingly states that her guides can be down right 'pushy' at times if she disregards the call. Regardless of how the fractal 'comes', each and every one of them emanates and expresses a unique energy of its own, just as every person does.
Personal Essence Fractals (Soul Portraits)
The first step in the process is to connect to the energy of the person, business or pet using a name. This is done through meditation. Once connected to the energy, the creation of the fractal begins. Working in a quite and meditative state, guidance is received as to what formulas to apply. It can take weeks before the fractal image is ready to emerge. Having been asked numerous times, "How do you know when a fractal is complete?" Cheryl respondes with a clear and simple answer, "I know when a fractal is ready because when the image renders on my screen it feels as if a gong has been rang and the vibration travels straight down my back."
Cheryl's connection to a person's energy is not the same as an intuitive connecting in to do a 'reading'. She does not look into the person's life, situation or happenings, she describes what she does more as connecting to the 'feeling' of the energy feild of a person.
The Expression of A Fractal
Each completed fractal or soul portrait is completely different and unique. The colors, symbols and appearance are direct representations of the energy which the fractal represents. There are multiple levels of meaning contained within the images. Many times, symbols appear that have direct meaning to the person/business to whom the fractal belongs. Some clients feel that their fractal contains meaning and messages from guides or spirits. Many are moved emotionally when seeing their fractals for the first time.
The Energy Within
Fractal Images, Science and Healing

What do crop circles, sacred geometry, near-death visions, altered states of consciousness, nature and our own DNA have in common? Fractals.
Visually stunning and often containing sacred geometry and symbolism, fractal images are powerful mathematical expressions. Many say that the energy contained within these images can be experienced right down to a cellular level. So what are fractals exactly? Technically, “a fractal is a shape that is recursively constructed or self-similar. This shape appears similar at all scales of magnification and is referred to as "infinitely complex".”1 Natural phenomena of fractal formations can be observed in snowflakes, clouds, coast lines, mountain ranges and more. Our genes and DNA create fractal templates which are used in complex processes involving information exchange. This process occurs within 98.7% of the so-called “Junk” DNA.
It was early in the 20th century, when French mathematician Gaston Julia discovered a fractal formula now referred to as the Julia Set. “The spiral patterns of this set follow the phi ratio and mimic the energy flow in various natural phenomena, including nautilus, lighting, spiral galaxies and so on.”2 But the most famous of fractal formula, the Mandelbrot Set, was later discovered in the 1960’s by Oxford mathematician Prof. Benoit Mandelbrot. Yet, it has only been with the invention of the computer that we are now even able to generate these fractal images.
These pioneers opened the gate way, with these incredible formulas that now enable us to visually see new levels and dimensions of energy and existence.
My own personal journey into the world of fractals began late in the year of 2005, when I had first seen a fractal image being used on a business card. It was love at first sight. It was also the beginning of a career change and moving my life back towards intuitive work once again.
Life has a way of nudging us to where we need to be if we are open and willing to go there. Following the guidance of my own inner knowing, as well as listening to the advice of some very gifted intuitives and my friends, I began working in the arts as a graphic designer and intuitive fractal artist. Incorporating the same methods and techniques that I had employed as an animal communicator and healer, I found it natural and easy to connect to the energy of individuals as well as the fractal images themselves. This enabled me to create intuitively based fractals that represented or expressed energy which matched the individual, creating a visual representation of that person’s energy. As my passion and involvement of these sacred energy impressions deepened, I soon became aware of another aspect of these fractal images. I knew there was energy and power within the fractals, but I needed to know exactly what they did. What was the meaning behind them, or within them? Through meditation and guidance, I soon discovered the answer. Fractal images emit energy, just as auras, orgone generators and crystals do. The energy of each and every impression is completely unique and has a specific purpose and effect. It is much like the Masaru Emoto water crystal phenomena, only in reverse. Dr. Emoto discovered that our thoughts, words and energy can effect changes within the crystalline structure of water. With fractals, the reverse is actually happening. The energy emitted from fractals have a direct effect on us; energetically and cellularly.
Besides confirming my findings with other intuitives, I also put the fractals to “The Test”. I wanted to measure the amount of energy coming from them. To do this, a friend and I compared two non-fractal art images that were “spiritual” in nature with two intuitively generated fractals. With dowsing rods in hand, the “testing” began. Dowsing rods are held pointing straight outward in front of you, one in each hand and parallel to each other. When they enter into any type of energy field, the rods are moved, swinging outward and away from each other. The two non-fractal images did emit an energy, which moved the rods outward to the size of the image itself when approaching the image at approximately one foot away from it. When the fractals were measured, the dowsing rods began to open at approximately seven feet in distance. The rods swung outward, opening completely at six feet. This was quite an incredible difference. Not even our own energy fields moved the rods at such a large distance away.
But with all the testing and theory aside, one only needs to gaze into a fractal image for a few moments to feel the incredible energy and power contained within them. Our understanding of fractals will develop with time. As will our understanding and use of fractals as healing tools, energy cleansers, and meditation aids. There are also a large number of crop circles which are repeatedly displaying fractal images. One can only begin to wonder what message it is we are being asked to acknowledge. As we open and gain more clarity into their meaning, we will soon begin to understand the complex meaning of fractals.
